50 GB Free Storage for Android-Based LG Phones

Web storage company Box has inked a deal with LG to offer 50 Gbytes of free cloud storage to the company's Android users.

LG mobile phone users can download the Box App now from the Android Market, which will offer up the 50GB automatically. Users who have signed up on the Box.net Web site (and received 5GB of free storage) or those who have already downloaded the Box app will be upgraded to 50GB when they update their app on an LG device.

Box will be offering the storage boost until March 31, but those who upgrade will have those 50GB for life.

The app works on devices running Android 2.1 that have a display resolution of 320-by-480 or higher. Features include the ability to upload files and view and share files on the go.

Users can view, upload, and share their content from anywhere, Box said. 50GB is equivalent to about 50,000 docs, photos and presentations.

Box ran a similar promotion for iOS devices and within the first five days, more than one million people downloaded the app and upgraded to 50GB. The company offered the same thing on the ill-fated HP TouchPad; Android is the third platform on which Box is extending the 50GB promo.

With Box, "you don't have to be shackled by the constraints of the antiquated systems that have been out there for so long," said Robin Daniels, director of product market strategy at Box. "If you look at who we're really trying to replace here, it's the antiquated [Microsoft] SharePoints of the world."

"The new world is a world of mobility; there's a revolution happening," Daniels continued.

Individual consumers have taken advantage of Box's 50GB offer, but "we're really seeing a huge uptake and a huge interest in companies," Daniels said. Many in the enterprise are "frustrated with not being able to access their files ... and now there's a better way to do that."
